SeekStorm is an open-source, sub-millisecond vector & lexical search engine.
We are an independent, bootstrapped team of engineers building search infrastructure without venture capital, growth-at-all-costs targets, or vendor lock-in.
SeekStorm was founded in 2020 and is based in Warsaw, Poland. But our experience in search and large-scale software goes back much further: our founders have more than 25 years of experience building search technology and distributed systems.
Built by people who have been building search for decades
SeekStorm is the latest chapter in a long history of building search technology.
Before SeekStorm, we built FAROO, a London-based, venture-backed, fully decentralized peer-to-peer web search engine. It explored a radically different approach to web search: distributing the work of crawling, indexing, and ranking across a network rather than relying entirely on a centralized infrastructure.
Over the years, we have worked across search, distributed systems, software architecture, telecommunications, and complex technology projects — experience that taught us to think not just about algorithms, but about the systems and businesses they have to serve.
That experience shaped how we approach SeekStorm today. We start from first principles. We question assumptions, measure everything, and optimize the parts of the system that matter.
Decades of working across search, distributed systems, software architecture, and complex technology projects taught us to look beyond individual algorithms and understand the entire system — from data structures and memory access to concurrency, hardware, deployment, and operational constraints.

We believe users should always have ownership of their data — free to move, self-host, or switch providers at any time.
We believe technological independence and freedom of choice matter — in Europe and everywhere else. SeekStorm is our contribution: open infrastructure that anyone can use, run, and own, wherever they are in the world.
Open source gives developers control over their infrastructure and prevents vendor lock-in. It also allows the community to inspect, improve, and extend the technology.
That is why SeekStorm is open source and permissively licensed. You can embed it into your application, run it on your own infrastructure, or use the same technology through SeekStorm Cloud.

Built from first principles
Performance is not something we add at the end. It is an architectural constraint from the beginning.
SeekStorm combines lexical and vector search in a single search engine, with a focus on low latency, scalability, and efficient resource usage.
The same philosophy extends beyond SeekStorm itself. We have created and maintain open-source projects that explore fundamental problems in search and information retrieval.

We believe that useful research should not stay behind a paper or inside a proprietary product. When possible, we release it as open source so others can use it, build on it, and improve it.

SeekStorm is bootstrapped and self-funded.
That gives us something we value highly: the freedom to make long-term technical decisions based on what we believe is right for the product and its users — rather than optimizing for the next funding round or an acquisition.
We can focus on engineering, performance, and building a product that earns its place in your infrastructure.
Our roots
SeekStorm is based in Warsaw, Poland, a country that has become one of Europe's largest and fastest-growing economies.
But our roots are broader than one country. Our founders bring together German and Polish backgrounds and academic experience from universities in both countries — including Dresden University of Technology, University of Stuttgart, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, and the University of Warsaw.
This combination of cultures, engineering traditions, and perspectives is part of who we are.
